Wayne McGregor's On The Other Earth is a 360-degree, 3D choreographic installation in which dancers from Company Wayne McGregor and Hong Kong Ballet appear life-size around the audience. Co-produced by Studio Wayne McGregor and Hong Kong Baptist University, it premiered at the Venice Dance Biennale in 2025 and came to London as the offsite extension of Infinite Bodies, the Somerset House exhibition that closed its 25th anniversary celebrations, presented in partnership with Stone Nest.
Groups of up to 20 people stand inside the nVis screen designed by Jeffrey Shaw and Sarah Kenderdine, a stereoscopic 12K LED cylinder eight metres wide and four metres tall, raised on a ring of truss beneath the dome of the former Welsh chapel on Shaftesbury Avenue. The London run lasted from October 2025 to February 2026, and the work then travelled to Tai Kwun in Hong Kong.
At Somerset House, Infinite Bodies also included AISOMA, an AI choreographic tool trained on McGregor's archive and developed with Google Arts & Culture Lab, which turned short movements recorded by visitors into new choreography.
The build
A crew of three KitMapper LED engineers built and commissioned the touring nVis system for Studio Wayne McGregor, working from the manufacturer's installation manual.
The system goes up in a fixed order: a truss frame in three rings on steel foot plates, three rows of LED panels hung around it, then power and signal cabling to every panel, the slowest part of the build. Only then are the processors and playback computers connected, the image tested and the panel door that closes the cylinder tuned flush. At Stone Nest the crew worked from scaffold towers beneath the dome.
