Future of English is the British Council's touring exhibition on how the English language is changing and who will shape it, produced with the immersive studio Factory 42. It opened at the British Council's London headquarters in Stratford in April 2023 before travelling to Brazil, India and Viet Nam.
KitMapper fabricated, installed and consulted on the exhibition's interactive elements. We built three freestanding totems, Technology, Work and Community, each housing a touchscreen and carrying vinyl-wrapped back panels with hands-on pieces: pivoting discs, hinged flaps and a sliding panel that reveal answers to the exhibition's questions. A structural engineer sized the ballast so the totems could be pushed and handled safely, 85 kg of cast iron in each base, and every unit was PAT tested on site.
In September 2023 we moved and reinstalled the totems in the building's Podium Gallery for an extended run, adapting the back panels for easier access. For the tour we designed a modular display system of powder-coated aluminium tube and tension-fabric walls, with panel and screen-mount configurations, documented so that each venue could source and assemble it locally.
